I’m still here!
Been distracted by Canada’s awesome performance the Winter Games. Work has me busy and traveling. I’m working on some interesting articles that give some clear differences in views between cultures. See you back soon. Subscribe to the RSS feed to be notified when new articles are posted.
Television will not be the same
I don’t watch that much mainstream TV aside from Big Bang Theory, How I met your mother and Smallville. The rest usually involves a few FoodTV shows, Discovery channel and National Geographical shows. You know, shows that you can learn stuff from.
Two of the shows I watch recently suffered some tragic deaths in regards to main characters. On the Discovery show “Deadliest Catch” , which for people who are unaware of the show, is about Alaskan crab fisherman working the dangerous Bering Sea. One of the ship captains, Phil Harris, had a stroke earlier this month and passed away a few days later. If you watched the show, Phil was the captain of the fishing vessel Cornelia Marie and he was easily my favorite captain on the show. Brutally honest, dedicated to his ship/crew/sons and steadfast in his drive to get this done. Phil was often shown chain smoking cigarettes, drinking energy drinks and hauling up some obscene amounts of crab. His character and personality clearly radiated on the show and by all the comments on the Cornelia Marie website will be missed. Phil Harris left at too early of an age, but he died doing what he loved, with people that cared for him and really that’s all that matters.
A Pit Bull. For many, just mentioning Pit Bull puts fear into their hearts. They’re dangerous, violent and unstable people say. Then a few years ago came along a show called Dog Whisperer on National Geographic and showed the world Daddy the Pit Bull. A happy, calm and stable Pit Bull that would change the view many had about large aggressive dogs. Cesar Milan was the guy who helped others and their unstable dogs (really the humans were the ones that needed training), but the real star of the show was Daddy. Daddy showed other dogs and people how being calm and stable was the key to being happy. He was the dog that everyone wanted their dogs to be like. He’s the kind of dog I wanted.
I’m glad that Phil Harris and Daddy were both on tv. If you watch the right shows, television can teach you a lot about life. Dedication, loyalty, determination and hard work. They’ll both be missed and I’m afraid television won’t be quite the same without them.
Introduction: What I learned from watching Star Wars
“Luke, you’re going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi
The site layout is still being worked on and information being filled out, but I wanted to get this line and introduction out of the way. This one line from Star Wars Episode VI, pretty much sums up my view of the world. Everybody sees the world in their own way. Their own personal events and their environments shape themselves completely differently from other people. This makes each and everyone of us unique, which is a very good thing. A world full of similar people would not be very fun, and probably boring.
Now this uniqueness also has its dark side (Star Wars reference intended). People seem to have trouble accepting that others have a different view on things and that scares them. This had led to discrimination, verbal and physical abuse or even outright war. Human history, and even current events, has too many ugly events because people will not accept or understand that other people are different. This leads to much suffering.
As Yoda cryptically said “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering”. Now it is best if you look at previous line backwards. To end the suffering, to stop the hatred, and remove the anger, you have to let go of your fear. If people would remove their fear of others that are different, don’t you think the world would be a better place?
